"Ma Tovu Ohalecha Yaakov Mishkenotecha Yisrael. How goodly are your tents o Jacob your dwelling places o Israel."
Synagogue means assembly and is a place of worship for Jewish communities around the world. It is also a meeting place for many other activities of study, celebration and fellowship. It is very appropriate that we are named the Beth Jacob Synagogue as truly we are blessed with a very goodly meeting place. The space is welcoming and the people who assemble there are warm and friendly.
To paraphrase Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in his book "The Dignity of Difference": "Our world is comprised of Legislative buildings that represent the seat of government and the home of politics where politics is the creation and distribution of power. Our streets are filled with shops and offices and trading exchanges that represent the market, the home of economics, which is about the creation and distribution of wealth. And something else is necessarily present the steeples and spires of Churches and Synagogues and Temples representing religion and faith.
Rabbi Sacks concludes: "Markets depend on virtues not produced by the market, just as states depend on virtues not created by the state. Where are they created? In families, communities, friendships, congregations, voluntary associations and fellowships of various kinds. In short wherever people are brought together not by exchange of wealth or power but by commitment to one another or to a larger cause they serve in common."
The Beth Jacob community is just this type of fellowship where relationships and trust and faith are built. The Pearl and Max B. Herman Centre lies at the heart of our community and serves as a place to meet, learn, celebrate, laugh, cry, cheer and console one another and pray together.
